Neckbone Problems Increase during WFH, So How to Deal with It?

The trend of working from home or working from home (WFH) during this pandemic has increased the incidence of the neckbone problems. While performing WFH activities such as computer activities, presentations, and meetings, the neck bones are subjected to the most pressure. Many of them have lengthy meetings.  After that, it still has to make a report or do the task. Sometimes, without enough rest.

In the WFH period, many people experienced problems in the cervical and lumbar regions because these are the areas that became most under pressure when someone spent too long in one position.

Neckbone Problems during WFH

When you look at the human spine, there are a lot of different parts. These parts are called cervical (neck), thoracic (middle back), and lumbar (waist).

Compared to other bones, neck bones have smaller and more flexible sizes, but they are vulnerable to recurrent stress and minor injury.

This recurring minor injury for a long time causes the bearings to lose their small volume and become easily injured. Neck bones, in fact, play an important role in supporting body posture and protecting nerves.

Body Position when WFH

Aside from being stuck in a single position for an indefinite period of time at WFH, being stuck in a single position for an indefinite period of time will cause problems in the surrounding neck area.

The problems caused by a neck bone problem include the neck, stiff neck, local neck pain or spread, hunchback neck, balance disorder, and movement weakness.

The movement’s weakness is usually located in the hand. This caused the palm of the hand to weaken, holding the pen to frequently fall, and neat handwriting to become a shambles. These are the initial symptoms of neck interference, which causes our muscles to weaken.

It can cause balance problems if it is too heavy. Walking, for example, will be staggered and easily welded. This also causes disruption.

Three Neckbone Problems when WFH

There are three common neck problems:

    1. Axial Pain
    2. Radiculopathy Cervical
    3. Myelopathy Cervical

Axial neck pain is characterized by pain in the neck, shoulder, or upper back. Radiculopathy Cervical is characterized by pain radiating from the neck to the shoulders, palms, and fingers. Cervical Myelopathy can cause numbness in the hands.

Wikipedia says that Neck pain, also known as cervicalgia, although felt in the neck, can be caused by numerous other spinal problems. Neck pain may arise due to muscular tightness in both the neck and upper back, or pinching of the nerves emanating from the cervical vertebrae. Joint disruption in the neck creates pain, as does joint disruption in the upper back.

In order to avoid problems with the neck bone, it is critical to adjust the work position to be comfortable and ergonomic.

Handling Neckbone Problems While WFH

Before making any other adjustments, you should first set a chair or sitting position. Backrests that fit the curve under the back, thighs parallel to the floor, armrests under high elbows, and arms beside the body are all good options. And the feet must be able to rest comfortably on the floor or leg.

Then, set the monitor screen. Instead of bowing down or raising head up, the eyes must be directed toward the monitor or laptop screen. Also, remember to stretch in between working activities. Never stop to learn more about good health.
